i don’t want my pre-baby body back (go home, photoshop)

I don’t want my pre-baby body back.

I want my POST-baby body to be as healthy as it can be.

I’m going to get a little sassy here.

Who decided that every woman in our society – ages 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, has baby, has no baby, grandmas, aunts – needs to look like a 21-year-old “perfect” woman? Who decided this? I’d like to know. And then I’d like to kick said person in the shins.

What even IS perfect? What on earth?!

I do have an idea of where this skewed-you-must-have-no-wrinkles-or-bumps-and-also-look-twenty lie started, however. The lie started with the thief – “The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy, but I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full” (John 10:10).

It would seem the thief has come to us stealthily through ads, pornography, and deception to steal, kill, and destroy that which is one of the most cherished, powerful things in the world: a woman’s soul, spirit, and BODY.

That’s right. I said it. Our womanly bodies are ridiculously POWERFUL because God knit them together to BE BEARERS OF LIFE. To be shapely. Curvy. Straight. Soft. Stretched. Strong. Healthy. Muscular. Freckled. Tan. Black. Brown. Fair. Givers of milk.

Our bodies are not anything to be ashamed of. They’re not anything to be worshiped. They are gifts to be CELEBRATED, CHERISHED, and TAKEN CARE-OF.

So I’ll say it again: I don’t want my pre-baby body back. Even if I didn’t have a baby, you know what? I DON’T WANT MY 20-YEAR-OLD BODY BACK, EITHER. So shove it, advertisements.

Go home, photoshop.

I want my 29-year-old body to be HEALTHY, KICK-BUTT, AND PERFECTLY 29.

I don’t think pioneer women had time to sit around and compare their bodies with other photoshopped pioneer women. MyLANTA they were so much more progressive than us.

I work out. I love working out. Know why? Because I am ALIVE and healthy and I have LEGS and I love using them! I work out because I have PCOS and exercise manages the symptoms. I work out because it’s FUN and God has given us this beautiful earth as a PLAYGROUND. Know why I will NEVER work out? TO LOOK LIKE I’M 20 AGAIN.

Go home, photoshop.

Do I fit into lots of my pre-baby clothes? Yes. Will I fit into all of them after a second baby someday? Probably not. AND WHY SHOULD I? Our bodies are constantly changing because they are SUPPOSED TO. If our bodies looked the same our whole lives we wouldn’t be masterpieces, we would be BORING.

What on earth. When did we as a society start believing less-than for ourselves?

Will I wear a (tasteful) two piece this summer? YES. Know why? I find one pieces constricting. My torso is basically the longest part of my body, so two pieces it is. Guess what I did? I bought two different sizes I’ve never worn before and am getting them altered to perfectly fit my body. Will I feel beautiful? YES. Do I have a little pooch where flat abs used to be? YES. Do I hope said pooch goes away? Of course I do! I love my abs! Abs are wonderful! But if said pooch decides to stay? Guess what? I’M 29, I HAD A BABY, AND I SURVIVED A PULMONARY EMBOLISM and gosh darn it I think that is amazing.

Go home, photoshop.

We as Christian women will choose to enjoy life, to enjoy and be thankful for our bodies, and to enjoy life to the full.

Now I’m going to go work out and also eat salad and also eat chocolate because I’m a 29 year-old daughter of the King and by golly that in itself more than “perfection” will ever hope to be.

Mic drop.
